No, not wyrm tunnels, although a dragon did do damage to the place when those rifts opened. We were tasked with traveling there to clear out the rubble, but I'm unclear on whether we can access it without express permission.
[ Most likely not. Thorne takes a great deal of care with where it lets its Summoned travel, and Thancred's guess is that they only opened up the Frostwurm Tunnels to them because there was work to be done there.
Still, that doesn't mean it isn't possible to access the tunnels by other means.
He pauses for a moment, fingers drumming on the table as he takes a sip of his drink with his other hand. This smells of a task of some sort, and he does so love those. ]
I'll look into it when I can. How does that sound?
[ Blighted land, angry gods. That doesn't sound so different from Scion business back home, if he's honest.
Thancred raises a knowing eyebrow. ]
You must have found it frustrating to be shoved into a place far away from all the action.
[ Although it all seems to have calmed down by now, so perhaps it had been a false alarm of sorts. Better safe than sorry and all that.
Himeka's quick to turn the question back on him, and Thancred sends a reflexive glance around them to ensure there's no one nearby before he responds with a confirming nod. ]
Nothing I haven't been through before — with you, I might add. I'm only relieved I had some manner of advance warning before it all started. In that sense it was an improvement over our escape from Ul'dah.
[ It isn't a time that he brings up lightly. There had been much lost then, but it was also so long ago now, the wounds at least partially healed over. ]
do you know if there's something relatively easy i can make for thancred? she's not very good at cooking but he's letting us stay with him in nott, so i thought maybe i could try as a thank you gift
[ She mumbles it a bit, smiling and feeling vindicated for her misunderstanding from years past. (It certainly wasn't her fault they weren't clear.)
Still, there were valuable crystals in those tunnels, wyrms or worms besides. If Thancred can gain access to them, then they might have a place to start.
She nods, knowing full well that he will do his best, leaving no stone or crystal unturned. There's a thoughtful pause as she regards him, nursing her own stein. ]
You're in Nott now too? You didn't get in trouble, did you?
[ River is formidable in her own right, but Himeka still can worry a bit! And, well, knowing Thancred had to flee makes the stakes a bit higher. ]
But a gift that isn't cooking? Hmmmm.
[ That's hard, given that's Himeka's default. But thinking on how hard it's been for Thancred to be apart from his surrogate daughter, Ryne, she thinks... ]
You know, I think he would like nothing more than something special that reminds him of you, River.
trouble is everywhere. it's troublesome. but the castle is a coffin and i don't want to lay down waiting for the end to come.
[ so thankfully, not the same dire situation that thancred and yennefer were in, but not a whole lot better either. they're trying to make the most of it. ]
we have to save our coin so we can give them their couch back soon, but food is a practical expenditure so maybe cheap and easy to make is the key. would you accept a new student in your kitchen?
[ her false memories of their time in azem's domain watching her cook with kassa are some of her favorites, which is why river thought to ask himeka for help with this. ]
[ An understandable sentiment. As someone who likewise doesn't enjoy being confined, Himeka can empathize. ]
I'm glad you found a place to stretch your legs, then.
[ Here Himeka was trying to think outside the box, but when River asks to be taught to cook...
A pupil? Truly? The one field of learning Himeka ever only applied her heart and soul to is that of the culinary arts. Fishing, she grew up with. Magicks? They came naturally. (Certainly she had areas of improvement, but they served her just fine.) But cooking? Cooking she struggled, toiled, failed, and broke through until she got it just right. Years training under the greatest chefs in Eorzea...
Is...is it her time to be the master? The teacher? ]
River...
I would be delighted to have you as a student! In fact, you would officially be my first!
[ hopefully river's excitement is tangible through text because !! ]
a few people have recognized the dialect from a version of earth-that-was but the only two that could speak it were from different 'verses entirely
[ and now that she knows himeka can read it, river will probably start sending her messages that are intentionally written with chinese characters just for funsies science. ]
There are certainly more comfortable places, yes. The docks weren't too bad when you could be in the water.
Well, when you put it that way... I wouldn't doubt your kindness! I've just never had my own Triple Triad Card before. This feels like a rite of passage.
